Call to Artists

Applications to be a part of The Spon Spun Arts and Heritage Trail 2018 are now closed. We hope you’ll come along to the Trail (11am – 4pm on Saturday 15th September) and see all the amazingly creative work local artists have produced for it..  We’d love to know your favourites!  If you are an artist, perhaps you will be inspired to apply to be part of the trail next year….?

The Spon Spun Art Trail is a one-day event that takes place in September.  The Trail co-incides with Heritage Open Weekend and takes in a number of heritage venues around Spon End. Following the Festival, work selected from the Trail is exhibited in the City Centre.  This year, the exhibition will be at Artspace Arcadia Gallery, 32 City Arcade, Coventry.

Each year we warmly invite artists from all areas of Coventry and the West Midlands to submit artworks/projects to be included in the Spon Spun Art Trail.  We are interested in interventions, installations, performances, experiments, moving images, video based work, artistic research projects and concepts which benefit from being installed in the Spon End environment.  We are particularly interested in proposals that address the theme of ‘Spon End Stories’ and/or which encourage creative playfulness, engagement and interaction.

Artists can apply by submitting a completed application form (see below).

How to apply

Application is through an open call process (deadline for 2018 Trail has now passed). To make an application please download the application form here:

Return the completed form either via email to, or by post to: Coventry Artspace, Floor 4, Eaton House, Coventry CV1 2FJ.  Mark your email or envelope ‘SPON SPUN ART TRAIL PROPOSAL’ .

Artists working in all disciplines can apply.  This can include, but is not limited to, music, video, sculpture, installation, drawing, painting, photography, performance, sound, interventions, participatory and collaborative work.

Artists do not need to live in Spon End to apply. The key requirements are a willingness to experiment with showing your artwork in unusual spaces, and an openness and curiosity to see what happens when you extend your practice in new ways through engagement with the art trail.

It is expected that there will be at least 12 stops on the Art Trail.

Selection panel

The selection panel will consist of representatives from the Spon Spun Management Group.

Selection criteria

The selection criteria are artistic quality, originality, creativity and feasibility of realising the project.  We are also particularly interested in projects that respond to the theme overarching theme of ‘Spon End Stories’ and/or the specific theme chosen each year.  In 2018 the specific theme is #Re-invention.
